South Asian 124: Modern Indian Literature

This course aims to introduce the vernacular and the Anglophone literary landscapes of South Asia by providing an overview of the role and growth of modern literature in India. This course examines the different socio-cultural, political and historical contexts in the production and reception of literature by Indian writers residing within India and in other diasporic spaces.

Sanskrit 100A: Elementary Sanskrit

Sanskrit 100A, followed by 100B, introduces students to Sanskrit grammar, with the goal of developing the skills necessary to speak and read basic, simple Sanskrit texts. Sanskrit 100A covers lessons 1–12 of the Devavāṇīpraveśikā , including, the script, sandhi, the present system , the karmaṇi and bhāve prayoga-s, the laṭ, laṅ, and the loṭ, and bhūte kṛdanta-s, and past active participles, nominal stems  in –a/ā, i/ī, u/ū, an, aḥ, iḥ, uḥ, ant, ṛ, and in .

Khmer 100A: Intermediate Khmer

This class is for students who can already speak and understand "survival" or "home Khmer." No previous knowledge of written Khmer is required for the course. Students will learn the basics of reading and writing as well as formal speaking. Topics covered include folk tales, Buddhism, and news media. This class is the first in a two-semester sequence (along with Khmer 100B). Class participation makes up the majority of the grade for this class. Students are expected to attend all classes (4 days per week) and come prepared to participate in each class.

Khmer 1A: Introductory Khmer

This class is for students with no previous speaking ability in Khmer, and is the first part of a two-semester sequence, along with Khmer 1B. Students will learn "survival" speaking, reading, and writing skills in Khmer, and also become familiar with and learn how to act within Khmer culture. We'll spend roughly 60% of our time on speaking and listening, and 40% on reading and writing. Topics covered include greetings, pleasantries, friends and family, and the home. Class participation makes up the majority of the grade for this class.

Indonesian 100A: Intermediate Indonesian

This course provides readings in Indonesian textbooks, newspapers, journals, and literature. This class provides students with the skills needed to use Indonesian adequately in familiar situations and to communicate general messages. Students will be expected to be more skilled to speak Indonesian with sufficient structural accuracy and vocabulary to participate in most formal and informal conversations on practical, social, and professional topics.

Indonesian 1A: Introductory Indonesian

Indonesian 1A introduces students to elementary Indonesian conversation and develops reading and writing commensurate with the students’ abilities. This class provides  students with the skills to express words and phrases such as greeting people, leave taking, talking about oneself or family, indicating time, asking and giving directions, asking about basic everyday activities, describing various objects, expressing emotions, etc. This level provides students the skills needed to use a limited range of Indonesian language, adequate for basic communication.

Hindi 101A: Readings in Modern Hindi

This course is designed for students who have already acquired upper-intermediate or higher level of Hindi. Its objective is to move students toward a greater level of proficiency in all language skills and introduce them to a variety of contemporary literary genres. Weekly readings, class discussions, and compositions will be on short stories and poems by representative authors and will focus on various social, cultural, political, and historical aspects of Indian society.

Level: Advanced/Proficiency (CEFR C1/C2)

 

Hindi 100A: Intermediate Hindi

In Hindi 100A, you will learn to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. You will learn to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where Hindi is spoken. You will learn to produce simple connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. You will learn to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Level: Intermediate (CEFR B1)

Hindi 1A: Introductory Hindi

In Introductory Hindi, you will learn to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). You will learn to communicate simply and discuss routine tasks requiring  simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. You will be able to describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment, and matters in areas of immediate basic need.
