Hana Jo is a Ph.D. student in South and Southeast Asian Studies at UC Berkeley. She holds a B.A. in Buddhist Studies and an M.A. in Indian Buddhism from Dongguk University in Seoul. Her master’s thesis explored the exceptional lay figure Citta and his preaching through textual studies of the Citta Saṃyutta in Pali and Classical Chinese.

She studies three key topics through Buddhist texts: (1) pre-modern and contemporary lay Buddhism, (2) Buddhist philosophy on meditation and practice, and (3) the application of Buddhist thought to contemporary life. The Buddhist texts that interest her include Pali, Sanskrit, and Classical Chinese texts, as well as vernacular texts from Thailand.
