This course will interrogate some of the key historiographic debates that have shaped our understanding of Indian history between 800 and 1750. We will explore the nature of historical memory, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh religious identities, scribal cultures, popular politics, local (versus imperial) state formation, legal regimes, the environment and warfare, and climate change and artistic developments, among other themes.
