Priya Kothari


Priya Kothari studies South Asian religious texts and traditions with a particular interest in the devotional communities of Gujarat and Rajasthan and their lives in the diaspora. Her ethnographic research focuses on storytellers of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa in the Puṣṭimārga and Vallabha Sampradāya, and her dissertation examines debates around the performance of the sacred text filtered through generations of received commentary in Sanskrit, Braj Bhasha, Hindi and Gujarati. Prior to joining Berkeley, Priya received an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from Carnegie Mellon University.
