Padma D. Maitland

Padma D. Maitland’s research focuses on modern Buddhist art, architecture, and literature in India and their association with various nationalist movements. He has a parallel research interest in Hindi travel literature and its impact on framing Buddhism as a model for social, political, and religious reform. Building on the transnational histories imagined around modern Buddhism in India, he also has an ongoing curatorial and research interest in hope as an emotional register within colonial and postcolonial discourses and its expression in the art and architecture of the Non-Aligned Movement, new Futurisms, and international solidarities across the Global South.
