Kathleen Cruz Gutierrez


Kathleen (Kat) is completing a dissertation on the history of botany in the Philippines (1858-1936). She is interested broadly in modern Southeast Asia, science and technology studies, and species-level investigations. Her writing to date has contributed to the history of science in the Philippines, weaving and textile studies, and the environmental humanities. Kat’s doctoral research has been funded by the Social Science Research Council, the Fulbright-Hays program of the Department of Education, and The Huntington Library. After completing postdoctoral work at the New York Botanical Garden as their Humanities Mellon Fellow (2020-2021), she will join the University of California, Santa Cruz, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History.
