Janet Um

Janet Um is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies. Her fields of research are Sanskrit literature and literary history; narrative in the literature and art of early Indian Buddhism; and constructions of gender in the premodern world. Her dissertation explores the intersection between poetic genre and urban sociability in the prose writings of the early-medieval Sanskrit poet and aesthetic theorist Daṇḍin. Janet’s research is guided by her interest in modes of storytelling in premodern South Asia, an interest that she engages with in both her MA thesis “Crossing the Ocean of Story: The Kashmiri Bṛhatkathās in Literary Context” and in her dissertation project.
