This graduate seminar will explore the idea of modernity and its place in Southeast Asian history. What defines modernity? Connections between classical cultures, religion, colonialism and nationalism will be discussed. We will pay close attention to changing textual traditions, the definition of historical genres, the construction of archives and the use of source material in Southeast Asian studies. The emphasis will be on Indonesia, and the twentieth century, in comparative perspective.
