SANSKRIT - Intermediate - Epic Sanskrit
Prerequisite: Sanskrit 100AB or the equivalent
Sanskrit 101A introduces students to the epic and commentarial styles of Sanskrit. An extended passage from either Vālmīki’s Rāmāyaṇa or Vyāsa’s Mahābhārata is read with commentary. Developing strong reading skills and building vocabulary are the goals of the class. Additionally, students are introduced to the use of print-based and web-based resources. Grammar is reviewed and reinforced as needed. Students are also introduced to past and current current scholarship on the epic literature. Students are expected to memorize at least one verse per class for recitation. Submission of an annotated translation project, assigned in class, is required. Course content changes every semester and may be repeated for credit. Sanskrit 100AB or equivalent is required.
