One of the great empires in world history, the Mughal Empire is synonymous with wealth and power (hence the term “mogul”); artistic and architectural achievement (as seen in such examples as the Taj Mahal); cultural transmission between the Islamic world and South Asia; conversations between Islam and Hinduism; and powerful royal women who helped run the empire. This course will use translated primary source materials as well as secondary scholarship to not only understand the Mughal Empire on its own terms but also understand its place in the politics of contemporary India and Pakistan.
