This course is an introduction to the literary cultures of early modern Hindi. The primary focus will be on the literary cultures of bhakti (devotion). We will consider the devotional verse of poets such as Kabir, Mira, Sur and Tulsi. Other literary genres that emerged from within the major devotional communities of North India will also be included. We will also consider literature that was produced under the patronage of the regional courts of North India as well as other emerging groups such as merchant communities. Themes will include, but are not limited to: language, aesthetics, connections with other literary traditions, development of literary genres, and community formation. Hindi language training is not required. Translations will be provided.
